Fatal Tesla Model Y Accident in Modesto

On the morning of September 30, 2023, the Modesto Police Department reported a fatal car accident involving a Tesla Model Y in the area of Carver Road and Pelandale Avenue. The crash occurred shortly after 12:00 a.m., and two occupants were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Details on the Fatal Tesla Model Y Accident in Modesto

A preliminary report by Modesto PD officers indicated that a Tesla Model Y was traveling eastbound on Pelandale Avenue when, for undetermined reasons, the vehicle allegedly collided with a light pole at the intersection.

The Tesla driver, Modesto resident Jasjit Gill, age 33, sustained fatal injuries at the crash site. A passenger in the Tesla Model Y, a Fresno man, suffered injuries described as moderate. No other vehicles were involved in the incident, Modesto PD reported.

The batteries of the Tesla Model Y posed hazards. As such, this prompted the closure of Pelandale Avenue for several hours, Modesto PD reported. An investigation into the incident is ongoing to determine what caused the fatal collision.

Car Accidents and Lithium-Ion Battery Explosions

Lithium-ion batteries are found in many products on the market today. The unfortunate reality about these products is that there may be defects and conditions that may cause battery explosions. Furthermore, devastating losses and injuries may occur from defective lithium-ion batteries causing explosions. Errors in the manufacturing or design process may cause improper ventilation in batteries. Conversely, jagged fragments may cause damage to the polypropylene-based shields of lithium-ion batteries. Faulty charges may also cause overheating, leading to a battery explosion.

Explosive lithium-ion battery auto accident cases are not uncommon. Injuries and deaths resulting from car battery explosions in crashes have resulted in many products liability cases. Various automakers have come under scrutiny regarding safety after reports of lithium-ion battery explosions causing injury and death. High-voltage lithium-ion batteries in Tesla vehicles have been previously investigated by the United States National Transportation Safety Board. According to the NTSB, the batteries in Tesla vehicles may pose safety risks to emergency personnel following traffic collisions.

When an individual has been injured or killed in a car accident in which a lithium-ion battery explosion occurred, the injured party or surviving family member of the deceased individual may have grounds for a products liability claim. These cases may be brought against the manufacturer of the lithium-ion battery and the automaker for the resulting damages.
