Major Injury Pedestrian Crash in Modesto Under Investigation

MODESTO, CA — A major injury pedestrian crash in Modesto is under investigation by the Modesto Police Department, examining the details of a serious-injury crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle that occurred Thursday, October 1, 2026, at East Orangeburg Ave and Claus Rd.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear. Police have not yet released information about what caused the crash or the condition of the pedestrian.

As investigators work to determine what happened, southbound Claus Road is currently closed at Briggsmore Ave. Claus is also shut down heading north at Scenic Drive. Police said there is no set time for when the roadway will reopen.

For now, the circumstances of the crash remain unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.

Pedestrian collisions can be particularly serious because, unlike people inside a vehicle, pedestrians have virtually nothing protecting them from the force of an impact. A collision with a car, pickup or other vehicle can result in traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, fractures and other potentially life-changing harm.

And sometimes the most serious injuries aren’t immediately obvious.
