Driver Seriously Injured After Big Rig Overturns on Highway 101

On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, one person sustained severe injuries during a truck accident on Highway 101 on the southern end of Eureka. California Highway Patrol (CHP) initially believed the accident may have involved a second automobile but later reported it as a solo-vehicle collision. Additionally, no other individuals sustained injuries during this incident. The cause of the crash remains under official investigation.

Collision Details

The collision happened shortly prior to 4:10 a.m. on Highway 101 near The College of The Redwoods. While the events leading up to the accident have not yet been reported, police indicated that a large semi-truck hauling a load of lumber overturned, coming to a rest on its roof. CHP reports indicate that the cab of the vehicle came to a stop in the road while the rest of the truck was on the highway shoulder. Additionally, police stated that the truck spilled lumber across the highway as it rolled.

Response

Emergency responders reached the accident site quickly, arriving at around 4:15 a.m. When officials found the wreck, they discovered that the crash had ignited a small fire. However, responders were able to quickly extinguish the flames. After putting out the fire, responders determined that the truck driver was trapped inside of the wrecked cabin. The injured driver was reportedly removed from the truck by firefighters using heavy machinery.

After the driver was extricated, he was rushed to a nearby hospital by ground ambulance. Medical officials indicated that the man had sustained severe trauma during the collision but did not provide specific details about his injuries.

Investigation

The crash scene was closed to traffic while police responded to the incident and remained closed while investigators searched the area. Reportedly, it took a significant amount of time for work crews to remove the wrecked truck and the highway wasn’t fully reopened until around 3:30 p.m, causing major traffic delays.

As CHP officers continue to look into the incident, no likely causes have been reported. Truck accidents can be complex and many happen because of non-driver factors such as issues with the road, phantom vehicles, or defective pavement.

Rollover Accidents

In cases that involve rollovers, the manufacturer of the truck may be considered partially responsible if the roof of the vehicle did not provide adequate protection. This means that if the roof of a vehicle crushes during a rollover, the manufacturer might be liable to pay for damages.

However, it’s vital to take quick action if you are seeking compensation for truck accident damages. Truck companies are very aware of the risks that such large vehicles pose to drivers. This means that when accidents happen, these companies are well-prepared and begin working on a legal defense immediately. The sooner your lawyer can get to work on your injury case, the more effectively they can protect your right to claiming compensation.
