One Suffers Fatal Trauma During Eureka Bicycle Collision

On Thursday, October 1, 2020, one person tragically sustained deadly injuries during a Eureka bicycle collision. The accident occurred at night in the central area of the city and involved one passenger vehicle in addition to the bicycle. The decedent’s identity is currently being withheld by Humboldt County officials. Additionally, no other people suffered injuries during the accident, and the incident is currently under investigation by the Eureka Police Department (EPD).

Crash Information

The accident happened at around 11:04 p.m. on the 2400 block of Broadway Street/Highway 101. EPD has indicated that preliminary evidence suggests the bicyclist was riding northbound on Broadway between the road’s edge and the fog line. At this time, a passenger vehicle was driving northbound on Broadway in the number two lane, heading toward the cyclist.

For unknown reasons, the bicycle and vehicle crashed into each other head-on, reportedly inside of the number two lane on the southbound side of the road. As a result of the impact, the bicyclist was thrown from his bike, landing in a nearby parking lot.

Response

After the accident occurred, it was reported to EPD, who immediately sent out responders. Emergency officials reaching the location of the accident found that the cyclist had sustained severe injuries. Tragically, personnel from Humboldt Bay Fire pronounced the individual deceased on-scene.

Investigation

According to EPD, the driver remained at the accident site and cooperated with investigating officers. The driver was reportedly not suspected to have been under the influence and voluntarily underwent an evidential blood test. Police have suggested that low visibility may have been a factor in this accident, but have not mentioned any confirmed causes.

Collisions like this can be hard for police to investigate because they cannot ask the decedent about the events that took place. Unfortunately, this can make it difficult for police to fully understand the accident and may lead investigators to leave important evidence uncovered. This can be an especially serious issue if non-driver factors like defective vehicle or bike parts were involved.

Contacting an Attorney

The best way to ensure that the collision is fully investigated is to reach out to a Eureka wrongful death lawyer who has experience privately investigating deadly accidents. By having an attorney conduct their own accident investigation, you will ensure that a skilled professional is looking into the case with your family’s rights as a priority.
