Decedent Identified Following Eureka Bicycle Collision

On Monday, October 26, Humboldt County authorities released the identity of a man who tragically lost his life after being injured in a Eureka bicycle accident. The decedent was identified as 67-year-old Eureka resident Thomas Burns. The Eureka Police Department (EPD) reported that the accident took place two days earlier and involved a single vehicle in addition to the bicycle. The cause of the accident is still under EPD investigation.

Crash Information

The accident reportedly happened at around 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of West Wabash and Broadway. Burns had been riding his bicycle on Broadway while the vehicle was traveling on Wabash. As the cyclist rode through the intersection, the vehicle performed a right-hand turn in order to enter Broadway. At this time, the vehicle collided with the broadside of the bicycle, throwing the rider off the bike.

Police were contacted shortly after the incident occurred and immediately dispatched a response team to the site. Upon arrival, responders found Burns in the roadway and determined that he had been seriously injured. Tragically, Burns was officially pronounced deceased at the location of the accident. No other individuals suffered trauma during the collision.

Investigation

According to EPD, the involved driver stopped at the scene and remained there in order to cooperate with police investigations. As their investigation into possible causes of this tragic crash continues, officers haven’t released a full report of confirmed accident factors. Often, accidents like this one happen due to external factors that neither cyclists nor drivers can control. Such factors can include defective bicycles, hazardous roadway design, and more.

Unfortunately, the process of investigating a deadly bicycle accident can be a difficult task for police. Because officers aren’t able to ask the decedent about what happened, they may never fully understand what caused the crash. Sadly, this can leave families unable to obtain the compensation that they deserve for their losses. To prevent this, it’s best to have an experienced attorney conduct their own collision investigation.

Wrongful Death Damages

Families who’ve been affected by fatal accidents can be left in a very hard situation. Firstly, the emotional impact of suddenly losing someone you love can be overwhelming. Often, people experience intense grief in these situations and my need to take time away from their normal lives in order to process their emotions.

Furthermore, deadly collisions can also have a major financial impact, potentially leaving families without access to valuable services or even depriving them of their main income source. On top of these issues, many are left with medical bills related to the deadly crash.

While these situations can feel impossible, it is possible to reach out for help. Often, an experienced attorney can help grieving families claim full compensation for their economic losses as well as payments for their individual suffering.
