Chico Woman Killed in Tragic Car Accident

On Thursday, February 8, 2018, a local woman lost her life in a tragic pedestrian-motor vehicle accident in Chico, California. My deepest condolences are offered to the woman’s family and friends.

Accident Info

Officers from the Chico Police Department (CPD) have reported that a 72-year-old woman (whose identity has not yet been released to the public) was run over by her husband close to the couple’s apartment complex, Sunridge Apartments, in the area of Amanda Way at Forest Avenue.

Officers indicated that the accident occurred shortly before 11:30 in the morning when the department received a phone call reporting that a woman had been struck by a vehicle and pinned underneath. When officers arrived at the accident location they found a 72-year-old man who had been driving the vehicle sitting on a nearby curb.

The man told officers that he did not know what had happened and added that he had just recently arrived to his apartment complex when he called his wife in order for her to open the apartment gate manually because the automatic opening mechanism wasn’t working.

Neighbor’s Account

A neighbor of the couple who had been driving behind the man when the accident occurred spoke to reporters. The neighbor said that when the apartment gate swung open, the woman walked in front of the vehicle, apparently to enter the vehicle through the passenger side door. However, the neighbor described that the vehicle suddenly lunged forward while the woman was crossing.

The neighbor said that he immediately exited his vehicle in order to see if the woman had been able to avoid being struck, but found that she was pinned under the vehicle.

Response and Fatality

Responding officers lifted the vehicle off of the woman and performed CPR before putting her on an ambulance and rushing her to a hospital for intensive care. Medical officials reported that the woman was unable to overcome her injuries and was declared dead at the hospital a short time after her arrival.

The woman’s identity is being withheld from the public as officers complete a full accident investigation.

Investigation

CPD officers stated in a preliminary report that, after viewing the collision multiple times through footage captured on area security cameras, they suspect the incident to be a tragic accident. The report also indicates that drugs and/or alcohol do not appear to have been involved.

The driver has not been arrested and does not currently face any criminal charges. The incident is actively being investigated as an accident.
