One Suffered Injuries in Head-on Collision

On Sunday, January 21, 2018, a head-on collision in south Chico left one individual with traumatic injuries requiring hospitalization.

Accident Details

According to local news reports, the accident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m at the intersection of Park Avenue and 12th Street. Officers from the Chico Police Department (CPD) reported that three individual vehicles were involved and added that one of the vehicles was parked at the time of the accident.

The types of vehicles and particular circumstances of the collision have not yet been made clear by officials or witnesses.

Injuries

Reports indicate that only one individual received significant injuries during the accident. The injured individual was taken to a hospital after indicating that they were in serious pain to a responding medical official.

Investigation

CPD is currently conducting a full investigation of the incident so that they can understand what causal factors were involved. Although the investigation is not yet complete, officers of CPD suspect that one of the vehicles involved in the accident ran a red light.

Other factors that could possibly have been a part of this accident vary widely and include common factors like vehicle malfunctions, a distracted driver, DUI, driving over the speed limit, and more.

Head-On Accidents

Head-on auto accidents are widely known as one of the most dangerous collision types due to the compounded force that vehicle occupants sustain. Unlike other types of auto accidents, the two vehicles are heading toward each other prior to the impact and transfer their momentum directly into the force of the crash.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics estimate that, while only around 2 percent of auto wrecks are head-on collisions, more than 10 percent of U.S. fatal car crashes are head-on accidents. Additionally, statistics show that head-on collisions in which one or more involved vehicles are driving over 40 miles per hour almost always involve fatal or catastrophic injuries.

Non-Visible Injuries

As with this accident, injuries aren’t always as apparent as an open fracture or severe laceration. Injuries like concussions, heart injuries, organ damage, and more are all very serious and sometimes aren’t immediately noticeable. With many non-visible injuries, symptoms might not even develop for days or weeks after the accident has occurred.

Moreover, when non-visible injuries are left untreated, they can often worsen or cause secondary injuries. Because of this risk, it is always best to receive medical screening after you have been involved in any kind of accident. Not only will medical screening prevent your injuries from worsening and help you to heal properly, but receiving medical attention at the site of an accident helps adjusters, juries, and judges understand the seriousness of your claim for damages.
