Two Drivers Injured in Head-On Crash on Highway 70 Near Cherokee Road

Two drivers suffered moderate injuries following a head-on crash on Highway 70 near Cherokee Road on March 5, 2026, in the Cherokee area north of Oroville, according to the California Highway Patrol and California Department of Transportation.

Authorities reported that the crash occurred at approximately 2:56 p.m. on State Route 70 near Cherokee Road, about 10 miles west of Jarbo Gap.

According to preliminary data from the CHP, a head-on collision occurred on State Route 70 when a FedEx truck traveling westbound reportedly crossed the centerline. It entered the path of an eastbound pickup truck towing a trailer; investigators have not yet determined why the FedEx vehicle left its lane.

Both drivers became trapped inside their vehicles following the impact.

When first responders arrived, CHP officers and a Good Samaritan was able to free one of the drivers from the wreckage. Crews from CAL FIRE and other emergency personnel worked to extricate the second driver.

Both individuals sustained moderate injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Authorities stated that both drivers were in stable condition following the crash.

Debris from the collision forced a hard closure of State Route 70 near Cherokee Road while emergency crews worked to clear the roadway and investigate the incident. Motorists traveling through the area were advised to expect delays until the scene was cleared.

Officials continue to investigate the exact cause of the collision.

Safety Tips to Prevent Head-On Collisions

Head-on crashes are among the most dangerous types of traffic accidents because the force of two vehicles traveling in opposite directions can be extremely severe. Drivers can reduce the risk of these collisions by following several important safety practices:

  • Always stay fully alert and avoid distracted driving
  • Maintain proper lane discipline, especially on rural highways
  • Avoid passing unless there is clear visibility and adequate distance
  • Reduce speed on curving or narrow roadways
  • Be cautious when driving near commercial trucks or delivery vehicles
