I’m Ed Smith, a West Sacramento Truck Accident Lawyer. On Sunday, February 21, 2016 at about 5:30 a.m. a four-car accident took place on the Yolo Causeway. Initially, two cars crashed on Interstate 80 near Industrial Boulevard. Those vehicles were pulled over to the side of the road. A third car came along and became involved in the crash. Then a Budget box truck somehow went over the Yolo Causeway and caught fire. It remained on fire until crews from West Sacramento and Davis Fire Department arrived to help. Once rescue personnel got the fire under control they had to propel down over the side of the causeway on ropes to perform an extrication of the victim inside the box truck. It took approximately one hour to perform this very tense and difficult extrication.
What are the Injuries to the Box Truck Driver?
The 58-year-old driver of the Budget box truck sustained moderate to major injuries in this tragic four-vehicle accident. He is recovering at a local hospital with a broken leg and burns to his body.
What Caused the Accident?
California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this predawn crash. What may have contributed to this accident is poor visibility, dark colored vehicles pulled over to the shoulder and excess speed or inattention. The driver of the box truck appeared to be traveling at the posted speed limit but may have been unable to stop in time. It may have been difficult to see the dark colored vehicles pulled off to the side of the road.
