Why Your Pool Filter May Be Dangerous

Most homeowners do everything they can to make sure that the place they live in is safe for them and their families. However, many homeowners aren’t aware of a hazard in their own backyard. It may surprise you to learn that exploding pool filters are a real issue and are responsible for a high number of accidents that have caused serious and even fatal injuries. If you or somebody that you know owns a pool with a filter, you may want to read on and learn more about the hazards involved with these products.

Why Would a Pool Filter Explode?

Most pool filters are made of three basic parts; a tank, a lid, and a clamp that keeps the whole system locked together. Inside the filter, high pressure generated by a mixture of water and air. If too much pressure builds up inside of the tank, the lid or clamp may fail, causing a very dangerous explosion. These explosions can involve a massive amount of force and there have been cases where filter lids damaged roofs, ceilings of sheds, and even become lodged in nearby trees.

Possible Injuries

Pool filter explosions can cause very serious injuries. Some of the more common ones include:

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries – When a pool filter explodes, it shoots hundreds of small, sharp fragments into the air. If one of these pieces strikes your head, it can leave you with a serious brain injury. If you happen to be in your pool when it happens, it’s possible that you may be knocked unconscious and spend a significant amount of time submerged underwater. This can cut off the flow of oxygen to your brain, causing further injury.
  • Head Trauma – On top of brain damage, a pool filter explosion can also lead to a serious skull contusion and/or fracture.
  • Nerve Damage – Pool filter explosions are liable to send sharp fragments of plastic into people’s bodies. These fragments have the ability to sever tendons and nerves, which can cause loss of feeling and motion in a leg, arm, or other parts of your body.
  • Lacerations – Shrapnel from pool filter explosions can easily leave you with serious cuts. In many cases, these lacerations can cause permanent disfigurement or even disability.
  • Death – Tragically, there have been cases where an exploding pool filter left people with injuries that led to their death.

Recovering the Compensation that You Deserve

Companies are required to ensure that their products are safe for people to use. When it is found that a company has manufactured or sold something that wasn’t safe, they are considered at-fault for any injuries or damages their product caused. This means that people who have been injured by faulty or unsafe pool filters can file a personal injury claim against these parties in order to claim compensation for their financial and personal losses.

However, these companies usually pay for legal teams and going up against them takes time, experience, and effort. This is why it’s so important to reach out to an experienced products liability attorney who has the skills and resources it takes to make sure you and your loved ones are fairly compensated for medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering, and all the other damages you’ve suffered.
