When a Muscle Tear Requires Surgery

When a Muscle Tear Requires Surgery – Car accidents occur when people least expect them. Even minor accidents can leave people with lifelong disabilities that impact not only themselves but also their loved ones. According to some statistics that have been published by Driver Knowledge:

  • On average, there are about six million car accidents every year.
  • Close to 100 people in the United States die in a car accident every day.
  • About three million people in the United States sustain serious injuries in car accidents every year.
  • Nearly two-thirds of these injuries end up with permanent complications.

There are serious problems that result from car accidents, and steps need to be taken to try and reduce both their frequency and their severity. For those who are hurt in car accidents, there are many different types of traumatic injuries that might occur. One of these is a muscle tear.

Mechanisms of Injury: Muscle Tear

A muscle tear that occurs in the extremity can range widely in term of its severity. In an auto accident, the limbs could be pinned and stretched to extreme lengths. When the muscle fibers stretch beyond their maximum range, they start to tear. Like other injuries, muscle trauma can range from the most minor of strains to severe tears. Muscle strains are minor tears of the muscles. These are treated with symptomatic care, such as ibuprofen, and rest. On the other hand, other muscle tears could be severe, total ruptures.

Surgery for a Muscle Tear

In some cases, the entirety of large muscles could be ruptured. Some of the largest muscles in the body are the biceps, triceps, and quadriceps. Bending and twisting of the limbs could result in the rupture of one or more heads of these large muscles. As a result, the muscles are not going to heal with physical therapy, symptomatic care, and rest. Under these circumstances, when this care has failed, surgery is needed to put the muscle back together. This is a major surgical procedure that brings the muscle fibers back together and reattaches the tendons to the bones. Then, physical therapy is required to restore strength and function of the limb. This is a long process that could take months to be completed.
