Grant Received
The Community Oriented Policing Services of the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded West Sacramento Police Department (WSPD) a $250,000 grant. The grant funds the COPS Hiring Program of 2015. The money will be used to hire officers for the specific purpose of increasing crime prevention and building community partnerships.
Two New Police Officers for West Sacramento
WSPD will get two more officers by way of this funding. The grant money will also be used to build upon the Senior Lead Officer Program. This means that special officers will now be working to address specific issues in the community. Officers will be offering outreach in certain neighborhoods to build personal bonds with citizens and businesses to mutually develop problem solving crime prevention strategies.
What will the officers being doing?
One officer will be assigned to work with the West Sacramento transient and homeless community as part of the City’s Bridge to Housing project. Another officer may be assigned to the criminal and social plagues of the West Capitol Avenue corridor.
Together Everyone Achieves More
West Sacramento’s community policing has been a top-priority as exemplified by a current program known as T.E.A.M. This acronym stands for “Together Everyone Achieves More.”
The program was created by Senior Lead Officers as a result of their personal visits with West Sacramento Business proprietors in an effort to calm issues such as alcohol related crime, loitering and public nuisance issues.
These partnerships have brought about strategies such as enhanced security lighting, blight remediation and increased enforcement programs. The COPS grant will allow for continued growth of this beneficial program. Businesses in the area are reporting a decrease in alcohol and loitering disturbances.
West Sacramento Police Department looks forward to using the additional police officers to deepen trust and serve the community better.
