Vehicle Falls 80 feet in Santa Barbara Rollover Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Santa Barbara car accident lawyer. A vehicle that plunged over the edge of a road in Santa Barbara on Thursday, June 15, resulted in injuries. The crash is currently under investigation by the California Highway Patrol as to cause.

What Happened

The crash occurred about 7:00 in the evening along Gibralter Road when the person driving a sedan misjudged a turn. The vehicle ended up leaving the road and plunging some 80 feet down the side of a hill and stopped on its side, according to a representative of the Santa Barbara Fire Department. The vehicle contained two individuals, who got out of the sedan on their own and were able to make their way back up the hill to the road.

Further Details

Both of the people involved in the crash received medical treatment at the accident site by emergency personnel. Afterward, they were transported by ambulance to a local hospital. No further information is available at the time of this report as to their names or medical condition. Both the man and woman were reportedly in their upper 20s. Since it was getting dark when the crash occurred, thermal imaging was used by the fire department to ensure there was no one else involved in the crash. It is expected that the vehicle will be recovered on Friday due to the late hour.

Single-Vehicle Accidents Causing a Rollover

Both rollovers and single-vehicle accidents are common, and rollovers represent the highest rate of fatalities and serious injuries. Rollovers are caused when the vehicle becomes destabilized, either by being struck by another vehicle or, as in the above case, when taking a turn in the road. While any vehicle can be involved in a rollover, it is more common among vehicles with a higher center of gravity such as SUVs. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 95 percent of single-vehicle rollovers are caused when a vehicle leaves the road and begins a sideways slide into soft dirt or strikes a guardrail or other object. The force on the tires causes the vehicle to roll over.
