Intersection Accident at Elkhorn Boulevard Intersection Causes Rollover

A two-vehicle collision in Sacramento on August 17 resulted in an overturned vehicle following a T-bone accident. The crash happened, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), at the intersection of Elkhorn Boulevard and Sprig Drive shortly after 9:00 a.m. A black Dodge van involved in the collision reportedly overturned and was lying on its side, while the other vehicle ended up on the right-hand side.

Fault to Be Determined in T-Bone Accident

Although an injury was reported, no details were given. The accident involving the overturned vehicle is being investigated to determine which driver was at fault for the accident and how it happened.

Causes of a T-Bone Accident

In a broadside collision, which involves one vehicle crashing into the side of another car or truck, either driver may be at fault, depending on how it happened. These types of accidents commonly occur at intersections where:

  • A driver runs a red light and strikes another vehicle with the right of way broadside.
  • A driver makes a left turn, mistakenly thinking the light has changed to green. The same can be said for the other driver, who believes their light is green when it hasn’t turned yet. Either way, the vehicles end up in a side-impact collision.
  • Performing a U-turn across the traffic can end up causing a T-bone accident, especially if the driver is making that maneuver illegally.
  • A driver who is backing out of a driveway or parking lot can cause a T-bone accident if they don’t check for oncoming traffic behind them.

Rollovers in a T-Bone Accident

When a T-bone accident occurs, one or both of the vehicles can end up overturning due to the impact force. This can increase the extent of injuries both from the initial collision and then again in the vehicle rollover. Some of the types of injuries that occur in this type of collision include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries can happen either if the driver or passenger strikes the dash, windshield, or steering wheel and then again when the vehicle rolls.
  • Cervical strain or sprain is common in a T-bone accident and can be made worse when a rollover happens afterward. It is caused by the violent back and forth movement of the head during impact.
  • Bone fractures are a common occurrence in an accident of any type but especially if the collision involves a rollover and a broadside crash. Ribs, hands, legs, and forearms are especially apt to be broken as the individual inside braces themself or crashes into the dash.
  • Spinal cord and back injuries also occur due to the impact and being tossed around when the vehicle overturns. Back injuries may include torn ligaments, muscles, and other tissue, while injuries to the spinal cord may cause a herniated disc or even paralysis.

When an accident occurs that results in injuries, it’s recommended that the vehicle be retained. This is so it can be examined by engineers to determine whether roof crush contributed to the injuries. Because automakers are required to build cars that can support 3.5 times their weight if they overturn, the manufacturer may be held liable through an auto product liability lawsuit if the roof crushes in and injures those inside.
