Vallejo Resident Dies in Oakland Hit-and-Run

On Tuesday, March 31, 2020, a Vallejo resident tragically lost his life during a vehicle accident that took place in Oakland. The decedent was identified by authorities as 64-year-old Kenneth B. Allen. California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicated that the collision occurred at night and involved a hit-and-run vehicle. Officers are reportedly still looking for both the missing vehicle and driver.

Crash Details

The accident happened at around 9:30 p.m. on the westbound side of Interstate 580 in Oakland. Allen had reportedly been involved in a minor collision with another vehicle just east of the split at Interstate 80, otherwise known as the Berkeley curve. Allen exited his vehicle and was standing in the road when he was struck by a vehicle that immediately drove away from the scene. Officers reported that the vehicle may have been a dark green Ford F-150 or van.

Police were contacted about the incident and immediately sent out emergency responders to the accident site. When medical officials reached the area, they found that Allen had suffered critical injuries during the hit-and-run accident. Sadly, he was pronounced deceased on-site. No further injuries in relation to the crash were reported.

Investigation

According to police, the driver involved in the initial crash stayed on-scene and cooperated with responding officials. So far, no description of the hit-and-run driver has been made available. Additionally, CHP noted that neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor involved in the accident.

Anybody who witnessed the collision or has information about the missing driver and/or vehicle has been asked to contact CHP at their Oakland office using (510) 457-2875. Police noted that any information provided by the public would be greatly appreciated.

Hit-and-Run Accidents

With regular vehicle accidents, at-fault parties can be held responsible for the damages that they’ve caused. By filing a wrongful death claim against these parties and their insurance companies, families are often able to claim compensation for vital losses, including lost income, medical bills, and personal suffering. However, with a hit-and-run crash, families often worry about how they will claim compensation if the negligent driver can’t be located.

While police often do locate hit-and-run drivers, families may still have options for claiming wrongful death compensation even if the driver is never found. In many cases, these payments are available through their own insurance policies. Insurance policies often include “uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage,” which can frequently be used to cover hit-and-run damages.

However, this coverage is not a part of every insurance plan and insurers sometimes offer less compensation than their clients deserve. For these reasons, it’s always best to have an experienced wrongful death lawyer who can make sure that you obtain the full amount of payments that you and your family need to move forward.
