Vallejo Police Department Given Traffic Safety Grant
According to city officials, the Vallejo Police Department (VPD) received a major traffic safety grant for the federal fiscal year of 2021. VPD has reported that the funding will allow them to further education about traffic safety in the community as well as work toward creating a safe and equitable environment for all Vallejo roadway users.
The Grant
The funding that VPD has been given comes in the form of a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. VPD public information officers stated that a grant in the amount of $102,000 was issued for the purpose of ensuring “the safety of travelers and pedestrians” across the city. Furthermore, officials indicated that they believe this money will help to reduce the number of traffic-related injuries and fatalities on local roads.
VPD reports that the funds will go toward education programs as well as reinforcing patrols. Increased police patrols will be on the lookout for drivers who are operating their vehicles while under the influence as well as those who may be distracted. Additionally, VPD stated that extra patrols would be paying special attention to traffic violations like speeding, failure to stop at intersections, improper turning, and more.
Funds from the grant would reportedly be dispersed throughout September 31, 2021.
Traffic Issues in Vallejo
VPD Chief of Police Shawny Williams reported that Vallejo has been the site of six vehicle accident-related deaths in 2020 and that the department wants to ensure that it is taking “proactive measures” in order to prevent these kinds of tragic incidents in the future. In a statement about the grant, Williams added that VPD is “grateful for these resources” and that officers would show their appreciation by continuing their commitment to Vallejo’s traffic safety.
Dangerous Vallejo Traffic Violations
While there are a number of outside factors that can lead to car accidents, the majority of crashes happen because of a traffic violation. According to data released by VPD and other local traffic groups, the most common accident-causing violations in Vallejo were:
- Speeding (about 29 percent of accidents)
- Improper turning (18 percent)
- Right of way violations (15 percent)
- Traffic sign and signal violations (11 percent)
Less common violations included hazardous parking, improper passing, impeding traffic, broken headlights, tailgating, and more.
