Vallejo Injury Accident Causes Power Outages
I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo auto accident lawyer. More than 1,200 Pacific Gas and Electric customers were left without power after a car accident involving a power pole, sending the driver to a hospital on Wednesday, March 28, 2018.
Accident Information
The accident reportedly occurred at about 5:30 a.m. when the driver of a Kia sedan had been heading north in the area of 4300 Sonoma Boulevard. CHP said that the driver veered off of the roadway for unknown reasons. After the vehicle traveled off of the road, it drove along the sidewalk for a short distance before striking a 45-foot tall electrical pole that came crashing down as a result.
Injuries
Responding officials from the Vallejo Police Department (VPD) reported that the driver of the vehicle suffered injuries during the accident. The driver, who remains unidentified, was sent to the Sutter Solano Medical Center for treatment as well as screening for serious injuries.
No other vehicles or people were involved or injured in this accident. Updates on the condition of the driver have not yet been made available.
Outages
PG&E reported that the outage initially impacted over 1,000 residents spread across both Vallejo and American Canyon. A company spokesperson told reporters that workers were working quickly and safely in order to repair the damaged equipment shortly after emergency response to the accident was concluded.
The spokesperson noted that a remaining 260 customers were expected to have power returned to their buildings at about 4:30 p.m. By noon, the number of customers without power had dropped, but the estimated time for restoration had been extended to 5:30 p.m.
Traffic
The impact of the Kia with the electrical pole caused several live wires to hang dangerously low in the vicinity of the roadway. In order to reduce hazards related to the dangerous wires, officials closed Sonoma Boulevard, one of Vallejo’s main thoroughfares, from Highway 37 to Sereno Drive.
The closure caused major traffic as drivers were rerouted both west to Sacramento Street and east to Broadway Street as detours.
Investigation
Vallejo Police Department (VPD) is investigating this collision in order to determine the causal factors involved. VPD has made no indication as to whether or not they believe the driver to have been intoxicated at the time of the crash.
While minimal information about possible causal factors is currently available, common factors that remain under investigation by authorities include defective roadways and/or lack of proper signage, auto product malfunctions, driver distraction by a mobile device, and more.
Non-Visible Injuries
While individuals may not appear to be seriously injured when responders arrive, they may still need medical attention. Many serious injuries related to auto accidents such as traumatic brain injuries and internal bleeding can take hours, days, and in some cases weeks to show symptoms.
