Vallejo Crash Causes House Fire
I’m Ed Smith, a Vallejo car accident lawyer. On Wednesday, April 5, 2017, a vehicle crashed into a Vallejo home that was more than a century old. The vehicle struck a gas line, igniting an explosion that caused a two-alarm blaze and severe fire damage to the home.
Accident Details
Vallejo Police Department Sergeant Jeremy Huff told reporters that the car accident had happened at about 10:50 a.m. when a black Jeep Grand Cherokee and a white Chevrolet sedan were driving in opposite directions at the intersection of Marin and Louisiana Streets.
The two vehicles collided with each other which caused the driver of the Chevrolet to lose control of their vehicle and drive off of the road into a house located on the 1300 block of Marin Street. Vallejo Fire Department spokesman Danny Gutierrez reported that when the sedan struck the house, it damaged a gas main and ignited a leak of explosive gas.
Witnesses and Response
Witnesses who had been in a nearby park at the time of the incident reported hearing a small explosion and then seeing the fire spread to the entire first floor of the house. When the fire department arrived, the flames had already spread to the second story and the second alarm was called.
Early reports indicated that an elderly man might have been trapped inside the burning building and firefighters entered the home looking for the individual, not knowing that the fire had been caused by a leaking gas main. After firefighters found nobody in the home, crews determined the source of the fire and orders were given to completely evacuate the building. The section of Marin Street outside the building was blocked off as firefighters continued to quell the fire from the outside.
Injuries
Thankfully, nobody was seriously injured as a result of the incident. The driver of the Chevrolet was able to extricate himself out of the broken window of his car and refused medical treatment, claiming to be unharmed. The driver of the Jeep was taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment of what were reported to be minor injuries. The two people who had been inside the house at the time of the collision quickly evacuated the house and suffered no injuries.
Putting Out the Fire
The Vallejo Fire Department spent about 20 to 30 minutes putting out the fire and remained on-scene and ready for 40 minutes longer while workers from Pacific Gas and Electric ensured that the house was no longer leaking explosive gas. The fire was determined to be totally under control at 12:23 p.m.
Charges
It is currently unknown whether on not any parties involved in the incident will be pressing criminal charges. Furthermore, the incident remains under investigation by multiple agencies.
