Vacaville Hit-and-Run Patient Recovers

I’m Ed Smith, a Vacaville personal injury lawyer. A 51-year-old male resident of Vacaville was released from the hospital last week after being severely injured in a hit-and-run accident five days earlier.

How did the Accident Happen?

The man had been riding his bicycle down Vaca Valley Parkway at about 5:45 p.m. on the evening of Sunday, May 21, 2017 when a woman who the victim described as being in her 30s or 20s, driving an old green-colored car, drove through a stop sign at high speeds at the intersection of Crystal Springs Drive. The victim had been biking across the intersection and the woman broadsided him, knocking him off of his bicycle.

The man described the collision, saying that he had been pedaling, looked up and saw the vehicle, and was on top of it before he had the ability to swerve out of the vehicle’s way. After knocking the victim off of his bicycle, the driver of the green car drove off without stopping at all to see if the man was okay.

Injuries and Hospital Stay

Although the victim is employed as a flight paramedic and EMS coordinator at the Oakland Fire Department, he initially attempted to ignore his injuries and rode his bicycle back to his home. However, after a couple of minutes passed, the victim found he could not breathe while he was taking a shower and realized that he may have suffered a traumatic injury.

Medical officials reported that the bicyclist suffered a large road rash on his body, major bruising, and needed intubation in order to sustain his breathing after he suffered post-traumatic arrest of respiratory systems.

Police Investigation

Vacaville Police Department Officer Carly Stone has been investigating the case and attempting to locate and arrest the errant driver. Stone visited the injured bicyclist in the hospital. Stone had to interview the bicyclist through writing considering he was able to speak.

Stone posted a video of the bicyclist with breathing tubes in his mouth and nose to social media and asked citizens to message her with any information they might have that could lead her to the driver of the vehicle. The video has since received tens of thousands of views and Stone has received multiple helpful tips, including video footage of the vehicle taken from a home surveillance camera.

According to Stone, the victim and her have begun a friendship through their shared goal of catching the woman who drove away from a traumatically injured man.
