Vacaville Highway Crash Kills One, Injures Two

On Thursday, August 12, 2021, one person lost her life, and two more were hospitalized following a Vacaville highway crash. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials, the accident occurred in the morning and involved five vehicles in total. The Solano County Sheriff’s Office identified the decedent as a 33-year-old woman from Alameda and the injured individuals as a 71-year-old man from Albany and a 33-year-old man from Rohnert Park. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Crash Details

CHP reports that the incident happened at about 5:00 a.m. on Highway Interstate 80 at the junction of Highway Interstate 505. The Alameda woman was driving a Toyota Camry when her vehicle entered the freeway median and then veered back into traffic lanes. As it reentered traffic, the Camry crashed into a Hyundai Ioniq.

After the initial crash, the Toyota was struck by three additional vehicles, including a Honda Civic, a Volkswagen of unreported model, and a GMC Sierra. As the result of one of the impacts, the Toyota driver was ejected from her vehicle and onto the freeway.

Response

Following the collision, CHP rushed responders to the site. When they reached the area, officials discovered that the Toyota driver was severely injured. Sadly, she was pronounced deceased on-scene. The Volkswagen and Hyundai drivers were both transported via ambulance to the Kaiser hospital in Vacaville. Both men were expected to recover from their injuries.

Investigation

Eastbound traffic was diverted off the freeway for three hours while collision response and preliminary accident scene investigations were underway. While the cause of the crash has not yet been determined, CHP officials have stated that they suspected driving under the influence as a factor. Frequently, accidents are caused by a number of factors and may involve non-driver causes like defective car parts and faulty roads.

Anybody who has relevant information about the circumstances of this terrible accident has been asked to reach out to CHP to help with investigations. Those looking to get in touch with CHP regarding the accident should call (707) 428-2100 and speak with Officer Michael Barday.
