Ukiah Man Killed in Auto Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Ukiah car accident lawyer. A local man received fatal injuries in a car accident on Saturday, January 6, 2018. I’d like to extend my sympathies to those who were close to the deceased.

Accident Information

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers issued a report indicating that the accident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on Highway 101 at the crossing of Mendocino Avenue. The driver, a 58-year-old resident of Ukiah, had been driving southbound in his vehicle when the accident occurred. Authorities stated that the man drove off of the roadway for unknown reasons shortly before colliding head-on with a nearby redwood tree.

Injuries

After they received a call indicating that someone may have been seriously injured in an accident, CHP sent first responders to the accident site. Responders found that the driver had sustained major injuries in the collision and had him transported by ambulance to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Not long after arriving at the accident, the injured man lost his life and was officially declared dead.

Investigation

CHP’s investigation into this auto accident is ongoing. Officers have not made any indication as to whether or not they have suspicions that alcohol or drugs were involved in this crash. While the reason that the driver veered off of the highway remains unknown, multiple factors may have been at play.

A few factors that could possibly have been involved in the crash include; the reckless actions of another driver who left the accident scene, poor roadway conditions that forced the driver off of the road, driving at excessive speeds, and more.

Call to Action

Those who may have information that could aid CHP officers in their investigation have been asked by Ukiah Area CHP to contact them at (707) 554-4100 and (707) 588-1400. CHP indicated that any callers with salient information would be helpful and appreciated.

Head-On Crashes

Head-on accidents are one of the most dangerous types of accidents and head-on collisions that happen while vehicles are traveling over 40 miles per hour almost always result in critical or fatal injuries.

The situation in Mendocino County is no different. Between 2006 and 2017, 359 head-on accidents left individuals with traumatic injuries in Mendocino. These 359 accidents have caused 40 fatalities in 33 different accidents, 124 severe injuries in 77 accidents, 214 moderate injuries in 118 accidents, and 324 complaints of pain in 131 accidents.

As with other areas, head-on collisions in Ukiah are more frequently caused by intoxicated and wrong-way drivers. Additionally, head-on collisions in Ukiah cause more severe injuries than other types of auto accidents.
