Ukiah DUI Causes Injury

I’m Ed Smith, a Ukiah car accident lawyer. On Sunday, July 16, 2017, a man from San Joaquin County was arrested in Ukiah on charges of driving under the influence after causing another driver traumatic injuries in a collision. Further information about this incident can be read in the following article.

Accident Details

According to reports issued by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the collision occurred at about 4:30 a.m. CHP indicated that a 27-year-old male resident of Lathrop had been driving a 2006 Hyundai in the right-hand lane of the southbound section of Highway 101 and was approaching the intersection of Burke Hill. It was at this time that the driver reportedly began to slow his vehicle down in preparation for a U turn.

At the same time, a resident of Ukiah had been driving in the left lane behind the Hyundai. When the Hyundai entered the U-turn, it forced the Ford to collide with its rear-end.

Response and Injuries

When CHP responders arrived at the crash site, they found that the driver of the Ford had sustained moderate traumatic injuries and transported him by ambulance to the Ukiah Valley Medical Center. One passenger of the Hyundai was also discovered to have sustained moderate injuries and was also transported by ambulance to the same hospital.

The driver of the Hyundai, as well as an additional passenger, were not injured in the collision.

Hit-and-Run

According to CHP, the driver of the Hyundai initially fled the scene of the accident, making the collision a case of hit-and-run. However, the man was soon found nearby. Additionally, the man was discovered to have been involved in an altercation with one of the passengers, adding a domestic violence charge to his arrest.

DUI

CHP reported that they believe the driver of the Hyundai to have been operating his vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Additional factors of this collision are still being investigated by authorities.

Dangers of DUI

About one-third of fatal automobile accidents in the U.S. are caused, at least in part, by drivers operating their vehicles while intoxicated. Drinking and driving is a serious offense and extremely dangerous. Alcohol slows drivers’ reaction times and can mean the difference between avoiding a collision and serious injuries.

If a driver is found to have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol in the event of an injury accident, they are legally considered negligent drivers and are liable to be held financially responsible for the damage they caused. If you plan on drinking alcohol outside of your home, always be sure that you have a way to get home that doesn’t endanger the lives of others.
