Ukiah Crash Injures Woman
I’m Ed Smith, a Ukiah car accident lawyer. On Friday, November 3, 2017, a collision on Highway 20 just east of Ukiah left three individuals with injuries ranging from minor to severe.
Collision Details
Officers from California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued reports indicating that a 49-year-old woman from Lakeport had been driving her 2000 Honda Civic west on Highway 20 at around 7:30 a.m. Authorities reported that it had been raining at the time, heavily enough to significantly wet the roadway. For reasons that investigators do not currently know, the driver of the Civic lost control of her vehicle close to the Road A intersection and crossed over the median into the oncoming eastbound lane of traffic.
After the Civic entered the eastbound lane, it entered the path of a 2016 Mercedes Sprinter Van driven by a 47-year-old male resident of Ukiah. The van driver reportedly attempted to avoid the collision but was unable to maneuver out of the way and the vehicles collided head-on.
Overturn and Third Vehicle
The impact of the collision pushed the van off of the highway where it overturned and rolled down the steep hillside on the highway’s edge, eventually coming to a rest on the passenger side of the vehicle. The Civic continued back into the westbound lane of traffic where it collided head-on with a third vehicle. The third vehicle was a 2005 Toyota Camry being driven by a 22-year-old male resident of Lucerne with an 18-year-old male resident of Lucerne riding in the passenger seat.
Injuries and Response
CHP sent emergency responders to the crash site immediately after hearing that there may have been serious injuries involved in the accident.
Responders discovered upon arrival that the woman driving the Civic had been trapped in the wreckage of her car. The woman was extricated from her vehicle by personnel from the local Redwood Valley-Calpella Fire Department and transported to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital to receive emergency treatment for what officials described as major traumatic injuries.
The driver of the Camry was found at the crash scene with moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Adventist Health Ukiah Valley for treatment. The passenger of the Camry reportedly was not injured during the accident.
Authorities indicated that the driver of the van sustained minor injuries. The van driver received treatment at the crash site, but whether or not he was taken to a hospital was unreported.
Investigation
CHP is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident in order to understand why the Civic driver lost control of her vehicle. Although low visibility and slick roads due to inclement weather were at play, other factors like distracted driving and DUI will be investigated by officers.
