Ukiah Car Accident Statistics

I’m Ed Smith, a Ukiah car accident lawyer. Ukiah is Mendocino County’s largest city and offers a close connection to the surrounding natural scenery, world-class cultural venues, and a beautifully restored historic downtown. However, Ukiah has also had a fair amount of injury-causing automobile accidents. Those who spend time driving in the area may be interested in some of the statistics included below.

Ukiah Car Accident Statistics by Severity

According to data compiled by researchers at the University of California’s Berkeley campus, there was a total of 187 accidents that resulted in injuries in Ukiah from 2013-2016. The data shows that Ukiah has a much smaller number of fatal accidents than other cities, as only one of these accidents caused a fatality

Over the three year period, 19 vehicle accidents severely injured those involved, making up 10.16 percent of all Ukiah’s injury collisions. After this, collisions in which somebody sustained a visible injury that was not considered to be severe made up 30.48 percent at 57 total accidents, and collisions in which one or more of the involved individuals complained of pain accounted for 58.82 percent with 110 total accidents.

Ukiah Car Accident Statistics by Type

In the period spanning 2013-2016, the most common accident type to harm people in Ukiah was broadside accidents. There was a total of 57 injury-causing broadside crashes in Ukiah, putting broadside accidents at 30.48 percent of all collisions to cause injuries. Broadside accidents were closely followed by rear-end accidents, which made up 27.27 percent at 51 total incidents. After this, the four most common were vehicle/pedestrian accidents, hit-object accidents, sideswipe accidents, and head-on accidents, accounting for 17.65, 8.56, 6.95, and 4.81 percent of all Ukiah’s vehicle accidents with involved injuries, respectively.

Common Violations

Accidents are not always the result of traffic violations and not every traffic violation will result in an accident. However, traffic laws are in place for a reason and breaking them does increase one’s chance of being hurt in an otherwise avoidable collision.

The most common violation to cause harm in Ukiah from 2013 to 2016 was drivers traveling over the speed limit. Speed limit violations caused 56 separate crashes that significantly hurt those involved, making up almost a third of all traffic violations to cause harm. The four most common violations after speeding violations were vehicle right-of-way, improper turning, traffic sign, and pedestrian right-of-way violations at 19.7, 8.56, 7.49, and 6.42 percent, respectively.
