Accident on 47th Avenue May Have Involved Drunk or Drugged Driving

A two-vehicle traffic collision in Sacramento on December 25 caused a major injury to one person. The accident happened around 2:35 in the afternoon at the intersection of 47th Avenue and 47th Street in the Lemon Hill area, according to the collision report by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). It involved a Hyundai sedan and a Toyota 4Runner.

One Party Transported to Kaiser With Major Injuries After Two-Vehicle Traffic Collision

One vehicle was pulled to the right-hand side, while the other blocked the roadway in the traffic collision. One of the people involved in the collision was discovered on the ground. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene. One patient was transported to Kaiser South Sacramento Medical Center with a major injury. Alcohol or drug consumption was not ruled out by authorities who were at the scene, and toxicology was called to administer a test to at least one person.

Injuries in a Two-Vehicle Traffic Collision

Of all accidents, the most common are two-vehicle traffic collisions. They range from a rear-end crash to a head-on collision. The injuries these accidents cause vary from minor to major, sometimes ending in a fatality. Some of the most common injuries are:

  • Head injuries: Among the worst injuries that a two-vehicle accident can generate are those that involve the head. Some cause a skull fracture, which, at its worst, can result in debris and pieces of bone penetrating the brain. Other traumatic brain injuries also occur:
    • Concussion: This injury usually resolves with rest and analgesics. Yet, in some instances, can be symptomatic for considerably longer periods. The symptoms of a concussion are frequently headache, confusion, and loss of cognitive function.
    • Hemorrhage: Bleeding onto the surface of the brain or intracerebrally can put pressure on the brain, and this results in dire symptoms. Usually, surgical intervention is needed.
    • Subdural hematoma: This TBI is due to the disruption of veins on the surface of the brain. The accumulation puts pressure on the brain and also responds to surgical intervention. Usually, the impact needs to be substantial, however, in some cases, even a slight bump may initiate a subdural. This usually happens in older individuals. Depending on the amount of venous leakage, the subdural may resolve on its own.
    • Diffuse axonal brain injury: This is the most severe form of TBI and is due to shearing of the axons that carry impulses (data) from one nerve cell to another. It can rob the injured person of functioning nerve transmission.
  • Chest injury: Traumatic chest injury can interfere with the work of the major organs in this body region. It can cause an injury to the lungs or heart with resulting problems. Immediate medical and surgical response is needed.
  • Abdominal injury: A two-vehicle collision can push the abdomen into the steering wheel or dash and cause injuries due to seat restraints. This can hurt the spleen, liver, and intestines. If the intestines are injured, the contents may spill into the abdominal cavity and cause peritonitis, which requires immediate surgery. If the abdominal aorta or its branches are injured, blood loss, sometimes fatal, can occur.
  • Cervical sprain: This injury, commonly referred to as whiplash, can cause head, neck, and upper back pain for varying periods. Medical treatment is needed for symptom relief.
