Two Killed in Big Rig Crash in Merced County

Two parties were killed in a big rig crash in Merced County on the morning of Sunday, October 10, 2021. The fatal truck accident occurred in the area of State Route 152 and Volta Road shortly after 6:00 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Details on the Big Rig Crash That Killed Two Parties in Merced County

Officers with the Los Banos area CHP office responded to the scene and located a 1999 Honda Accord in the No. 1 Lane and a 2008 Volvo tractor-trailer along the south shoulder of eastbound SR-152. CHP traffic officers indicated that the Honda reportedly sustained major front-end damage in the truck accident.

A preliminary report revealed that a 50-year-old Delhi man was driving the Volvo truck eastbound on Highway 152 near Volta Road. At the same time, the Honda was headed southbound on Volta Road. Both vehicles were reported to have collided at the intersection.

Sadly, the Honda driver, 33-year-old Felipe Molina Loera of Merced, and his passenger, 63-year-old Maria Chavez Salas of Merced, were both declared deceased at the scene. Additional information on the fatal crash was not immediately available.

Things to Know About Truck Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims

Commercial truck accident cases have significant differences when it comes to the rules of the road that generally apply to passenger vehicle crash claims. Truck drivers and trucking companies have duties in which are governed by state and federal laws. However, not all parties carry out their responsibilities and often break such standards to meet delivery deadlines and protect their bottom line. Big rig crashes occur all the time on California roads, and personal injury or wrongful death claims often arise as a result. Such cases are not always straightforward and may require significant time and effort to resolve in favor of the claimant. That is because insurance companies and trucking firms both have deep pockets to dispute claims filed against them.

The standards involved in truck accidents are often challenging to navigate due to the state and federal regulations in which govern the trucking industry. A civil case is often brought against at-fault parties such as the truck driver, the trucking company, and the insurer. Other parties that may be held liable for a big rig crash include loaders for the mishandling and improper loading of cargo, the manufacturer of the tractor-trailer for defective vehicle equipment, and more. To prove negligence on the part of these negligent individuals and entities, it is essential to retain legal counsel with the experience and skills to conduct an independent investigation into the incident and help you collect the fair compensation you deserve.
