Most Common Causes of Pedestrian Accidents Involving Motor Vehicles
Pedestrian accidents often arise from a combination of driver, pedestrian, and environmental factors. Recognizing these causes is essential for prevention and improving road safety.
- Distracted Driving: Motorists distracted by texting, phone calls, eating, or other activities may fail to notice pedestrians.
- Failure to Yield Right of Way: Drivers who do not stop for pedestrians at crosswalks or intersections increase the risk of a collision.
- Speeding: Driving at excessive speeds shortens reaction times and increases the force of impact when an accident occurs.
- Driving Under the Influence: Alcohol or drug impairment slows reaction times and impairs judgment, leading to higher accident risks.
- Poor Visibility: Low lighting at night, fog, rain, or poorly lit streets make it harder for drivers to detect pedestrians.
- Jaywalking: Pedestrians crossing away from marked crosswalks or disregarding traffic signals are at greater risk, especially in busy or multi-lane roads.
- Left-Hand Turns: Drivers making left turns may be more focused on oncoming traffic and overlook pedestrians crossing the intersection.
- Parking Lot Accidents: Heavy foot and vehicle traffic, along with limited visibility and confusing layouts, make parking lots high-risk areas for pedestrian accidents.
