Two Killed During Auto Accident West of Redding

On Friday, August 14, 2020, two people were fatally injured during an auto accident to the west of Redding. California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the crash involved two vehicles and happened during the afternoon near the border of Shasta and Trinity Counties. Local authorities have identified the decedents as 63-year-old Donna Marie Daly Nisson of Redding and 67-year-old Terry Hugh Hitchcock of Anderson.

Crash Details

The accident occurred at about 2:38 p.m. on Highway 299 near Buckhorn Summit, according to CHP Sgt. Tim Hinkson. Hinkson indicated that a Toyota sedan had been traveling eastbound on 299 when it entered a sweeping, right-hand turn. For unknown reasons, the sedan crossed over into westbound lanes and crashed head-on into a Ford pickup truck. As a result of the collision, both vehicles caught fire, and flames reportedly spread to nearby vegetation on the right-hand shoulder of the highway.

After CHP received a call about the accident, responders were rushed to the crash site. Upon arriving, officials discovered that both drivers were critically injured. Sadly, both individuals were pronounced deceased on-scene. According to CHP, no other individuals were involved in this accident.

Investigation

As CHP continues to look into the accident, officers have not mentioned what, if any, factors are suspected to have been involved. Car accidents involving multiple vehicles also often involve more than one causal factor and can be caused by non-driver accident factors like malfunctioning vehicles or hazardous roads.

Collisions with no surviving drivers can be very difficult for police to investigate. When officers are unable to ask drivers about what took place, it’s possible that investigators will not notice important evidence. In turn, this can leave families unable to hold at-fault parties financially responsible for damages. The best way to ensure an accident is properly investigated is to hire an attorney who can use their skills and resources to look into the incident themselves.

The Impact of a Fatal Accident

After learning that a loved one has suddenly passed away in a car accident, people are often in disbelief and experience a state of shock followed by intense emotions. The experience is often overwhelming and can leave people feeling unable to deal with their normal lives. In many cases, grieving individuals are able to find comfort by seeking help from people in their friend groups, families, or communities. However, deadly accidents can also have a major financial impact and grieving families often worry about how they will be able to recover.

Fortunately, it’s often possible for families to claim payments to help them recover financially after deadly accidents. This is possible through wrongful death claims, which seek to hold negligent groups, individuals, and/or insurers financially responsible for the damages they have caused. To learn more about wrongful death cases, it’s best to speak personally with a trustworthy attorney.
