Two Central Solano Highway Accidents

Two Central Solano Highway Accidents

I’m Ed Smith, a Suisun car accident lawyer. Two major accidents injured at least one individual and marred traffic for commuters on highway Interstate 80 near Suisun on Monday, August 28, 2017.

The First Collision

The first collision on I-80 occurred due to a flat tire, according to California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports. CHP indicated that a man had been driving a Toyota Corolla westbound on the highway at about 5 a.m. when one of his tires went flat. The blowout caused the driver to lose control of his vehicle and struck a box delivery van, causing the van to careen into the center median and collide with the metal guardrail before coming to a stop in the inside eastbound lane.

The driver of the delivery van reportedly received injuries during the collision and emergency responders put him in an ambulance to be transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The driver of the Toyota was not reported to have sustained any injuries

The Second Collision

CHP reported that the second collision of the day occurred shortly after 12:00 p.m. on the westbound side of I-80 south of the junction at West Texas Street.

CHP reported minimal details about the crash but indicated that it involved a recreational towing vehicle and a big rig truck. The towing vehicle reportedly overturned and landed on its roof. The big rig was also reported to have overturned, coming to a stop on its side.

So far, no reports have been released indicating that anybody was injured in this collision.

Traffic

CHP said that drivers in the area experienced hours of heavy traffic due to the accidents. However, traffic was reported to have been normal by around 6:00 p.m.

Tire Blowouts

When a tire blows out, vehicles can be thrown off course, and into objects or even the path of oncoming motorists. For this reason, tire blowouts can lead to dangerous vehicle accidents with the potential to leave individuals with serious traumatic injuries. In fact, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that tire blowouts are estimated to cause over 400 fatalities and over 78,000 accidents annually.

Avoiding Blowouts

There are a few things one can do to avoid being involved in a tire blowout collision:

  • Check your tires regularly to see if they have enough air and aren’t over-worn.
  • Avoid potholes and road hazards that might damage your tires.
  • Never overload your vehicle.
  • Make sure your tires aren’t too old. The common rule of thumb recommended by tire manufacturers is to replace tires every six years.
