Two Crashes on I-80 on Thursday

The stretch of Interstate 80 in the vicinity of Old Davis Road was the scene of two traffic incidents on Thursday, September 2, 2021. One resulted in the closure of several lanes in the early afternoon, and the other crash, later in the day, resulted in several people being injured.

Several Lanes Closed in the Early Afternoon

Shortly before 1:00 p.m., a pickup truck that was hauling a trailer was involved in a crash. The incident resulted in the closure of several lanes of Interstate 80 East near Davis, California. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued a SigAlert that warned drivers to either avoid the area or expect traffic delays. This incident affected lanes three through six of I-80.

Late Afternoon – Multiple Injury Crash

Later that same day, shortly before 5:00 p.m., another crash occurred on Interstate 80 in the vicinity of Old Davis Road. This collision resulted in injuries to several people, one of whom suffered life-threatening injuries, according to a report from the CHP.

Details of the Late Afternoon Crash

The multiple-injury crash involved a Chevy Impala and a minivan carrying four people. The driver of the Impala sustained severe injuries that were described as life-threatening. The four occupants of the minivan were also injured, the severity of which ranged from moderate to major.

Continuing Investigation

Details of the cause of the crash that caused multiple injuries have not yet been released. The CHP indicates that the investigation is ongoing.

How Does the CHP Investigate an Accident?

The CHP has a division known as the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT). This program has been in existence since 1978. The program gives the CHP the means to perform investigations and analyses of serious vehicle collisions throughout our state.  Major investigations may include accident reconstruction and a study of human, environmental and mechanical factors that may have led to the crash. They look at three phases of the collision: pre-collision, during-collision, and post-collision.  The program’s ultimate objective is to utilize the identified causative factors to prevent similar collisions in the future.

How MAIT Investigations Work

The direction and scope of each investigation are determined by the MAIT team leader, who will also coordinate the team’s efforts. MAIT officers are trained in a number of specialties, including:

  • Collision analysis
  • Accident reconstruction
  • Human factor analysis
  • Vehicle dynamics
  • Scene photography
  • The use of surveying equipment
  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software

There are two categories of MAIT investigations – full and limited. During a full investigation, the team will handle every aspect of collision investigation. Their report becomes the original report. In a limited investigation, the team will handle a specific element of the collision, and their report becomes a supplement to the original collision report. The difference between limited and full is often dictated by case complexity. This list is not definitive, but below are some other pieces of information that MAIT investigation reports may include:

  • Description of the roadway
  • Profile of the driver
  • Injury description
  • Autopsy description
  • Description, diagram, and/or analysis of physical evidence
  • Description of vehicle damage
  • Details of mechanical inspection
  • Calculations of velocity
  • Collision sequence
  • Conclusions and recommendations.
