Toyota Prius Recall
I’m Ed Smith, a Roseville auto accident attorney. The Toyota automobile company recalled approximately 340,000 of its Prius vehicles. The recall was issued due to a defect causing the vehicle’s parking brake to fail when used.
The 2016 and 2017 Toyota Prius models are subject to recall due to a malfunction in the parking brake. The parking brake defect can cause accidents because if the vehicle fails to remain parked, the car could roll away and crash. In the United States alone, there have been 92,000 vehicles recalled. In Japan there have been 212,000 vehicles recalled and 17,000 in Europe. In similar cases, there have been accidents involving vehicles rolling away that have been linked to deaths.
Fiat Chrysler filed a notice for recall in April 2016 for 1.1 million SUVs and cars due to an issue in with the parking gear. The defect in the gear for parking caused the mechanisms in the vehicle to be confused whether or not it was in park. Therefore, the recall was issued in order to ensure the safety of everyone.
Reported Accident Involving Recalled Vehicle
One of the vehicles that was included in the recall issued by Fiat Chrysler was a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle was owned by Anton Yelchin, an actor that was known for his role as Pavel Chekov in the rebooted “Star Trek” series. Yelchin passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2016 when his parked Grand Cherokee rolled away and crashed into him.
