Three Hurt During Head-On Accident in Smith River

According to local authorities, three people were injured during a head-on accident in Smith River that took place on Saturday, September 28, 2019. The crash involved two vehicles and happened in the afternoon on a state-operated highway just outside of Crescent City. Medical officials stated that two of the injured individuals suffered major trauma while the third was left with only minor injuries. Thankfully, none of the injuries suffered during the incident were life-threatening.

Crash Details

California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports indicate that the crash happened at 2:00 p.m. on Highway 101 to the south of Crissey Road in the small community of Smith River. A 1997 Toyota Rav4 had been driving north on the highway when it suddenly veered left for unknown reasons. The Toyota traveled into southbound traffic lanes and collided head-on with a 2004 Lexus RX330 at highway speeds, causing major damage to the front ends of both vehicles. The vehicles reportedly came to a stop in the road, blocking both northbound and southbound lanes.

Response

According to reports, the Fort Dick Fire Department, CalFire, Smith River Fire, Del Norte Ambulance, Cal-Ore Ambulance, and CHP all responded to this accident. Emergency officials arriving at the crash location found that both drivers had suffered major injuries while the passenger of the Lexus sustained minor trauma.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as a 60-year-old woman, suffered chest and back injuries as well as a fractured femur and lacerations on her arms. The driver of the Lexus, identified as a 73-year-old woman, suffered a fractured rib, leg, and injured her thumb. Finally, the Lexus passenger, a 63-year-old man, was left with pain in his hip and chest. All three individuals were taken to the Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City following the accident.

Investigation

CHP officers have indicated that this accident is still under investigation, and no suspected factors have been mentioned so far. Crashes like this one are often caused by a variety of factors, many of which are not under the control of the drivers involved. Head-on crashes are often caused by malfunctioning steering systems or other vehicle parts and can also happen because of dangerous hazards in the road that force drivers to make unsafe maneuvers.

How Will I Be Able to Afford My Medical Expenses?

Being injured in an accident can be very expensive. Between hospital stays, rides in ambulances, surgeries, therapy, medications, and other procedures, recovering from an injury is often very expensive. On top of this, being injured frequently leaves people unable to keep working for a significant period of time. For these reasons, it is common for accident survivors to worry about how they will be able to afford to regain their health. However, many people can get the money they need to cover these expenses by filing a personal injury claim and claiming the compensation that they deserve from negligent parties.
