Suspected DUI Driver Arrested in Brentwood — Six people were injured from two separate, State Route 4, accidents that took place near Brentwood on Sunday, November 4, 2018. Four of the six victims were critically injured and had to be airlifted to health centers for treatment. Their injuries range from moderate to life-threatening. The two car wrecks happened minutes apart and were allegedly caused by the same driver. The suspect, 33-year old Meagan Campbell from Discovery Bay, has been detained by California Highway Patrol (CHP) for a felony DUI.

State Route 4 Accident Details

The initial collision involved a motorcyclist that was hit head-on by a white Subaru Impreza Sport, according to a witness named Paulette Willis. Willis said that the Subaru was traveling in the eastbound lanes of State Route 4 before drifting into westbound traffic by the Byron Highway intersection and hitting the motorcyclist. The rider was ejected from the bike and landed on the roadway. In an attempt to flee the scene, the Subaru driver ran over the motorcyclist. With a group of bystanders who had pulled over to assist the injured motorist, Willis decided to follow the Subaru eastwards on SR 4. Two additional witness accounts confirmed Willis’ version of what happened.

The second accident happened as the Subaru tried to run from the scene involving the motorcyclist. According to witnesses, the Subaru made a short distance from the first accident before once again drifting into oncoming traffic and hitting another vehicle head-on, this time a gray Saturn filled with four occupants.

Two Accidents, Six People Injured

A variety of resources were employed to assist the many people that received serious injuries from these two collisions. Emergency responders that were at the accident site included Contra Costa Fire Protection District (CCFPD), East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD), Cal Fire, CHP, and AMR. State Route 4 was shut down to oncoming traffic from both directions.

According to Jeff Burris, ECCFPD Battalion Chief, the motorcyclist from the first accident was the first victim to be airlifted to a medical center. The motorcyclist is currently in critical condition. Three of the car occupants from the Saturn were also transported to medical centers via helicopter, and their injuries ranged from moderate to life-threatening. Two were taken to John Muir in Walnut Creek, while the other two were transferred to the Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley. No more information is available on their conditions at this time.

The remaining occupant of the Saturn sustained moderate injuries and was taken by ground to Sutter Delta in Antioch. CHP stated that the Subaru driver had minor injuries from the accidents. The CHP is investigating the accidents.
