Residents Lose Power After Alleged Drunk Driving Crash

A motorist suspected of drunk driving crashed a Corvette into an electric pole on January 12. That incident knocked out the power for around 10,000 Arden Arcade customers. The accident happened along Arden Way close to Watt Avenue at around 9:30 in the evening. By Monday morning, SMUD had restored power to all but a few businesses and homes as well as Arden Middle School, where classes had been canceled for the day. The driver was taken into custody at the accident scene, according to a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP), and had suffered injuries that were described as minor.

Drunk Driving Accidents

There are approximately 10,000 deaths each year in this country due to drunk driving. In addition, millions of dollars worth of property damage are due to the effects of drinking and driving. Some ways in which impairment affects a driver’s ability to drive safely are:

  • Slow reaction time: An impaired driver is unable to react to different situations. For example, the driver may not have time to slow down for a pedestrian or a braking vehicle in front of them.
  • Reduced concentration: Alcohol affects a driver’s concentration. Because of this, the driver is unable to attend to the multiple tasks that must be done to proceed safely. This includes staying in their lane, observing changing traffic signals, and obeying the speed limit.
  • Limited coordination: A driver needs coordination to perform many tasks as he or she drives. Loss of coordination affects the driver’s ability to do that.
  • Inhibited judgment: When one’s judgment is limited, a motorist who is drunk driving is less able to make important decisions while operating a motor vehicle. This includes determining the speed of an oncoming driver and what to do when another vehicle brakes suddenly in front of them.
  • Visual problems: When one’s vision is decreased, it is difficult to see stop signs or a vehicle crossing the intersection. Visual acuity loss also affects peripheral vision, so seeing a vehicle or pedestrian suddenly emerging from a side street is difficult when the driver is impaired.

Seeking Help From an Experienced Lawyer

A seasoned lawyer can help you get the compensation you deserve following an accident injury caused by a drunk driver. Our investigators head immediately to the crash site to gather evidence that supports your claim. First, they check the police report for mistakes and talk to witnesses. They perform accident reconstruction, which is an important way to prove the placement of a vehicle and help determine how the crash happened. In the case of a drunk driving crash, a conviction for this offense is evidence that the motorist was negligent. Cameras at traffic lights or local businesses can also provide strong evidence of how the accident occurred and who was at fault. Once all the documents and evidence is compiled, our lawyers use it to build a strong case in your favor. This can be used either in civil court or for our lawyers to negotiate on your behalf with the insurance company.
