Student Crashes Into HSU Sign

I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka auto accident attorney. A student drove through the sign for Humboldt State University (HSU) on the morning of Sunday, October 30, 2016. The HSU sign is actually a large retaining wall. Thankfully, the student was not seriously injured as a result of the impact. Many are wondering what caused this collision? Was it speeding, drowsy driving, a medical emergency, driving under the influence or perhaps texting while driving? An experienced auto accident attorney can often determine what happened.

Initial Reports by Local Authorities

A Humboldt State student was driving in the vicinity of Sunset Avenue and LK Wood Boulevard. For reasons that are still unclear, the student drove their vehicle through the university sign for HSU. Personnel from the Arcata Fire District responded to the crash at approximately 6:20 am. The report by the Arcata Fire indicated that they observed the driver of the vehicle with their face down on the sidewalk. The impact of the crash caused both of the vehicle’s front airbags to deploy. Fire personnel examined the student and realized only minor injuries had been sustained. The student was transported via ambulance from the scene. Thank goodness it was so early in the morning. This accident could have injured students and University personnel or caused pedestrian injuries for those walking near the campus sign.

Accident Under Investigation

Authorities from the HSU Police Department are currently investigating the solo car crash. According to Frank Witlatch, a Public Information Officer for HSU, a witness reported that they observed the student to be traveling at a rate of about 40 miles per hour before crashing into the sign for the university. The impact from the student’s vehicle caused a great big hole in the sign. Staff from the campus estimate that the repair costs for the sign will be about $7,000 to as high as $10,000. The Facilities Mangement Department for HSU have asked for immediate repairs which may take up to three months to complete. A tow truck driver was called to the scene to haul away the student’s inoperable vehicle.
