Stockton Hit-and-Run Accident Fatally Injures Bicyclist

I’m Ed Smith, a Stockton car accident lawyer. A man was riding his bicycle in south Stockton during the evening of Thursday, January 4, 2018. Sadly, the bicyclist was hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver.

We offer our heartfelt thoughts and sympathies to the family and friends of the man who lost his life on Thursday.

Accident Details

An elderly man was bicycling along Airport Way near Second Street at approximately 7:50 pm. For unknown reasons, an unidentified vehicle struck the man. The motorist of that vehicle left the scene upon impact, leaving the victim to suffer from his injuries.

Nature of Injuries

Medics were called to the area of the bicycle accident to render aid to the injured victim. The man was, unfortunately, pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel.

Identity of Victim

The identity of the victim has not yet been released by authorities. It typically takes a few days for authorities to first make contact with the family of the deceased. Once the family has been notified of their loved one’s death, the Coroner will then release the name of the victim to the public.

What Caused the Accident?

The cause of the hit-and-run accident remains unknown due to pending investigation. Investigators have not yet identified the suspect vehicle nor its driver.

Insurance in Hit-and-Run Accidents

When a suspect party remains unknown in a hit-and-run accident, victims may be unsure about how to prosecute a claim against the at-fault party. A beneficial coverage to add to your automobile insurance policy is Uninsured Motorist Protection (UM). This protection assists those who have suffered losses in:

  • Parties with No Auto Insurance
  • Hit-and-Run Accidents
  • Phantom Vehicle Accidents

Although this coverage is not required in the state of  California, it will be useful to have in the long run in the event of an auto accident such as this one.

Hit-and-Run Accidents and Wrongful Death

When a motorist is involved in an auto accident with another party, they are required to remain at the scene to fully identify themselves and render aid to those who may have sustained injuries. If a motorist fails to do so, they may face misdemeanor or even felony penalties depending on the severity of the collision. Drivers tend to commit such crimes for the following reasons:

It is unfathomable that a driver can commit such a senseless crime and leave a victim to suffer from their injuries at the scene. If someone you love has been fatally injured as a result of an accident, you do not have to endure this tragedy alone. It is imperative to contact a seasoned Stockton wrongful death lawyer to investigate further into the matter and shed light on those who are liable for the loss of your loved one.
