Six Dead After Woodland Collision

I’m Ed Smith, a Woodland wrongful death lawyer. On Saturday, January 7, 2018, 6 individuals received fatal injuries as the result of a two-vehicle collision.

I would like to sincerely express my sympathies to the friends and family of the fatally injured individuals.

Collision Details

California Highway Patrol (CHP) authorities said in an incident report that the accident occurred at about 12:30 a.m. Officers said that they initially received reports indicating that a vehicle had been driving on the wrong side of the road and were actively searching for the errant vehicle when the collision occurred.

Investigators from CHP said that the wrong-way vehicle, a Chevrolet, collided with an oncoming Dodge on the northbound side of Highway Interstate 5 a short distance north of County Road 17.

A Fatal Crash

Responders at the site of the collision reported that they found the vehicles on fire upon arrival. The woman who had been driving the Chevy, as well as the three women and two men who had been inside the Dodge, all lost their lives at the scene of the crash.

Authorities identified the occupants of the Dodge as Jessica Garcia, Christian Paiz, married couple Raquel Lopez-Valencia and Cristian Lopez-Cambron, and Cambron’s sibling Yaneth Lopez, who graduated from high school this year. An individual who was close to the passengers of the Dodge told reporters that the five friends had been on their way home from eating a the Woodland Denny’s when the fatal auto accident occurred.

The driver of the Chevrolet who had been driving in the wrong lane has not yet been identified by investigating authorities.

Investigation

Authorities are now conducting an investigation of the crash in hopes of fully understanding what factors caused it to happen. Investigators have said that it remains unclear whether or not driving under the influence of intoxicants was a factor. Witnesses indicated that the area had been affected by heavy fogs at the time of the accident.

Any persons who think they may have information about the crash that could assist officers with their investigation are asked to call the CHP Woodland office using the number (530) 662-4685.

Additionally, a fundraiser has been started to assist the families of those killed in the crash.
