Motor Vehicle Accident Causes

Thousand of people die or are injured in motor vehicle accidents each year. Ninety-four percent are because of driver error. Learning what causes most motor vehicle accidents can help more people avoid them. Following are some of the reasons:

  • Speeding caused 30.6 percent of all motor vehicle crash fatalities between 2006 and 2015. Excessive speed makes is more likely that a vehicle will go out of control. The faster the speed, the more risk of serious injuries or deaths. In 2015, 48 percent of the fatalities in motor vehicle accidents happened at speeds over 55 mph. Twenty-five percent occurred at speeds between 40 and 50 mph.
  • Drunk drivers have contributed to almost 113,000 fatalities within the past 10 years. This translates to nearly 30 percent of all motor vehicle accidents.
  • Distracted driving, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, refers to activities that take the motorist’s attention away from the road. They include texting, talking on a cell phone and changing the radio station or adjusting the vehicle’s temperature. It can also include activities such as eating or drinking, chatting with other people in the vehicle or accessing GPS. During the four-year period from 2010 through 2014, almost 4.5 million motor vehicle accidents were caused by distractions while driving.
  • Running a red light or stop sign are forms of reckless driving that caused around 705 fatalities each year between 2010 and 2014. Over 30 percent of the collisions caused by a driver happened in the afternoon hours. During the midday hours, 19.9 percent of the collisions occurred after a driver ran a red light. The safest time to avoid a driver running through a stop sign or red light was late at night. Only 9 percent of accidents happened at this time. When it comes to holidays, Memorial Day weekend is the time a driver is most apt to run a stop sign or red light.
  • Weather conditions contributed to 1.25 million motor vehicle collisions between 2010 and 2014. The majority were caused by wet pavement, followed by rain. Fog accounted for the fewest number of collisions.
  • Fatigue was deemed a factor in 1.4 percent of motor vehicle accidents. Between 2010 and 2015, it accounted for almost six million collisions.
