Baby Car Accident Symptoms
Car accidents are unfortunate circumstances that seem to happen to everyone at some point. They can not only cause damage to your car or another vehicle, but they can also cause traumatic injuries to you and the passengers in your car. Doctors have routine assessments that they will use for people who get into car accidents, but most of their assessments are based on where the pain is on the body and the degree of pain that is being experienced.
When it comes to infants though, they are not able to convey what kind of pain they are having or where it hurts. So how do you know if an infant is in pain? How do you know if your child or an infant may be suffering from a serious injury?
Signs of an Injury in an Infant
Since a baby or an infant can’t directly tell a doctor what is going on and what hurts, here are some of the most common signs that you can spot in infants who are suffering from an injury after a car accident.
- Excessive vomiting
- Irritability
- The infant is listless or limp
- Seizure or convulsions
- Changes in eating habits, refusing to breastfeed or take a bottle normally
- An irregular sleep schedule, or changes in the sleep schedule that they are used to
- If they are having a hard time falling asleep at night
- Crying excessively and frequently
- The infant is not able to be consoled as usual
- In infants less than a year of age you may see a bulging of the soft spot on their head
- Infant seems to be in pain
- Fever
- Breathing problems such as breathing fast or in a labored manner
Parent to Child Signs of Injury
Another way that you can assess if something is wrong with your child after they have gotten in a car accident, is to just observe your child closely. At the end of the day, parents know their child better than anyone, and there are different ways that parents are going to notice changes in their child’s mood, schedule, or behavior. If you are noticing any kind of mood or behavioral changes that aren’t in line with your child’s normal demeanor or behavior, please take your infant back in to see your doctor or physician immediately.
The Side of Caution
Since your infant can’t communicate any details of pain or not, it is always best to be prepared for the worst. If you, and your infant or young child, are in a car accident, even if you don’t see symptoms or signs of an injury, you should take them into your doctor immediately. Small children in cars are prone to head injuries, back and neck injuries, and rib injuries because their muscles, and their body, are still growing and developing, so it is better to be safe than sorry.
