Tragic Motorcycle Accident
Seven people were killed, and three others were seriously injured in a tragic accident that took place recently on a remote highway when a group of motorcyclists collided with a Dodge pickup truck.
Accident Details
Authorities say the truck with a flatbed trailer was traveling westbound when the driver slammed into a group of motorcyclists who were traveling eastbound. The devastating accident sadly resulted in seven deaths. Three other riders sustained serious traumatic injuries. The pickup truck went up in flames creating a horrific scene. First responders and investigators immediately arrived on the scene and treated those who were hurt. Investigators quickly identified the pickup truck driver and recreated the scene. After reviewing the information from the accident, authorities charged the pickup truck driver with negligent homicide.
Pickup Truck Driver Taken Into Custody
Massachusetts State police arrived at the home of the pickup truck driver and arrested him earlier this week. He was charged with seven counts of negligent homicide in addition to a charge of being a fugitive from justice. After the arrest, the pickup truck driver appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. While police are still investigating, there are other charges that the driver could be facing. According to information from the state police, there was a suspicious substance present in his home. If these turn out to be illegal drugs, more charges could be filed.
Not the First Legal Issue for the Driver
This is not the first time the driver has had issues behind the wheel. Earlier this year, he was arrested for drunk driving. He was also arrested in 2013 for the same offense. His license was suspended for about seven months, and he was placed on probation for a year.
Tributes to Those Who Were Killed and Injured
The riders were members of a motorcycle group called Marine Jarheads MC, which is a motorcycle club for marines and their family members. Tributes have poured out onto various social media platforms from people across the country, including from the state’s governor. A GoFundMe page has been established to help the families of those who were killed. Numerous flags in the area were flown at half-mast to honor the victims. Two of the three people who were hospitalized with injuries have since been released from the hospital.
