Alta Arden Expressway Accident Involves Motorcyclist and Vehicle

A two-vehicle accident in Sacramento on November 29 caused a serious injury to a motorcycle rider. The collision occurred around 3:50 in the afternoon at Alta Arden Expressway and Watt Avenue in the Arden-Arcade area, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) traffic report. The motorcyclist was reportedly involved in a collision with another vehicle.

Motorcyclist Suffers Serious Injury in Accident

The motorcyclist was found lying on the ground by emergency responders with the Sacramento Fire Department, and the bike was on fire. Once the fire was extinguished, the motorcycle was picked up by a tow truck to retain as evidence. The injured rider was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment of the injuries. The roadway was cleared for traffic about an hour after the crash.

Causes of a Motorcycle Collision

Motorcyclists are vulnerable to a serious injury such as brain trauma or spinal cord damage when they are involved in a collision with a much larger and heavier vehicle. Unfortunately, their basic lack of protection, even while wearing protective gear, may not be enough to prevent injuries. Motorists on the road keep a lookout for other vehicles but often forget about motorcycle riders, which can lead to a serious trauma accident. Knowing how to avoid being in an accident with a vehicle can be helpful. These accidents can be caused by:

  • A driver making a left-hand turn in front of a motorcycle rider is the most common reason for a serious injury.
  • A motorist who attempts to change lanes without properly looking for a motorcycle in his/her path can cause an accident with a serious injury to the rider.
  • A speeding driver or one who runs a red light or stop sign is a danger always but especially at an intersection where a motorcycle rider is legally passing through.
  • Drunk drivers are a danger to everyone and may not be focused well enough to see a motorcyclist before causing a serious injury accident.
  • A distracted driver can end up causing a rear-end collision with a motorcyclist, which can eject them from their bike.
  • Head-on collisions with a motorcycle rider can be devastating and can happen when a driver is passing on a two-lane road or speeding through an intersection.
  • Dooring accidents with a motorcyclist can occur when a driver or their passenger opens the door of a parked car without looking for oncoming traffic.

Investigations of Motorcycle Accidents

Because there are a number of causes for a motorcycle crash, evidence has to be gathered to determine why it happened. The aim is for the rider to be able to place a claim for the compensation he/she deserves to pay for their medical expenses, lost time at work, and pain and suffering. Some of the areas of investigation include:

  • Investigators examine the motorcycle for defects, which could have led to an accident. If this proves to be true, the manufacturer and others may be held responsible through a product liability claim. Negligence does not have to be proven under product liability, only that the product was used as intended.
  • Traffic surveillance cameras are examined to see if the serious injury accident was captured on video.
  • Accident reconstruction is performed.
  • The police report is checked for errors, and statements are taken from any witnesses to the serious injury accident.
  • The surrounding area is examined to see if government negligence contributed to the crash. If it was caused by potholes, poor lighting, or other problems, the government entity in charge may be responsible for the damages.
