Semi Overturns Along SR-44
The crash was reported at approximately 6:14 p.m. on State Route 44 near Mineral Road in the Viola area.
Initial reports indicated a white semi-truck had overturned, with later updates confirming the tractor-trailer came to rest on its side over the edge of the roadway.
Authorities said it was initially unclear whether any other vehicles were involved in the collision.
One Person Injured
Incident commanders reported one patient with moderate injuries at the scene. A medical helicopter was initially requested due to the nature of the crash, but responders later canceled the air ambulance after determining it was no longer necessary. Ground medical personnel continued to evaluate and treat the patient.
According to incident updates, the patient ultimately declined ambulance transport against medical advice.
Diesel Spill Reaches Nearby Creek
Although the tractor-trailer was hauling water, responders reported that approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the vehicle into a nearby creek.
Emergency personnel requested assistance from environmental agencies after determining they were unable to stop the leak. A local resident reportedly shut off a nearby Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) ditch to help prevent additional contamination.
Hazardous materials responders worked to contain the spill while traffic control measures remained in place.
Investigation Ongoing
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the rollover. Additional information regarding the cause of the crash has not been released.
The Risks of Commercial Truck Rollovers
Semi-truck rollover crashes can create significant hazards beyond the initial collision, including fuel spills, environmental contamination, roadway closures, and serious injuries. Commercial drivers should regularly inspect their equipment, properly secure loads, and reduce speed on curves and mountainous roadways to help minimize the risk of rollovers.
