Scooter Accident Kills Antelope Teen on Don Julio Boulevard

A teenager died on September 18 in the evening hours in an Antelope scooter accident at an intersection. The crash happened on northbound Don Julio Boulevard near Poker Lane at about 10:35 p.m. Officials with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the 14-year-old Antelope boy was on the sidewalk on the scooter and passed into the road into the path of a vehicle.

Authorities Determining Reason for Fatal Antelope Scooter Accident

The vehicle driver had been driving north along Don Julio and entered the intersection when the light was green. The teen died at the hospital. A GoFundMe page has been set up on behalf of the teen and their family. Impairment is not believed to factor into the cause of the fatal crash. The CHP traffic investigation unit is determining how and why the crash happened.

Vulnerability of Scooter Riders

Scooter riders are especially vulnerable to serious injuries and fatalities, especially after dark. The rider is much less visible to traffic, the scooter can be moving fast, and the rider may be wearing dark clothing, all of which can contribute to problems being seen by other motorists. It is important for riders to obey traffic laws and wear light-colored clothing and possibly reflectors on their vehicle to help avoid being injured in an Antelope scooter accident.

How a Motorist Can Cause a Scooter Accident

There are many ways in which a motorist can cause an accident involving a scooter. Negligence is the primary cause such as:

  • Speeding is a major cause of all types of accidents, including those involving scooters. By driving too fast, the motorist’s ability to slow down or stop suddenly is diminished.
  • Distracted driving is another major cause of crashes, including an accident. When a driver is texting, talking on their cell phone, or looking below the dash to change a radio station, it only takes a few seconds for them to miss spotting a scooter rider crossing the street.
  • Intoxication, whether through alcohol or drug use, prevents a driver from being able to handle a vehicle safely. Intoxicated drivers tend to weave in the roadway and their reflexes are reduced and vision affected. This can easily lead to an Antelope scooter accident.
  • Fatigue can affect a driver in a way similar to that of someone who is impaired. Nodding off to sleep or becoming unfocused on driving often leads to a collision that injures or kills someone else.

Wrongful Death Claims

When someone dies because of a negligent motorist, the family can file a wrongful death claim to recover damages. A wrongful death lawyer can help the surviving spouse and children by investigating the Antelope scooter accident or other type of collision and gathering the evidence to support their claim. By building a strong case for the recovery of compensation, the lawyer can handle negotiations with the insurance company or even take the case to court if needed.
