Fatal Street Racing Crash

I’m Ed Smith, a Brentwood auto accident attorney. Two motorists were street racing one another on San Tomas Expressway in Santa Clara on the afternoon of Sunday, November 6, 2016. Unfortunately, the street race came to a tragic end.

What Happened?

A Chevy Camaro was traveling along on San Tomas Expressway at a speed of over 100 miles per hour. Witnesses reported that they observed the Camaro driver racing with a silver Acura. When the driver of the Camaro could not brake in time for the stopped traffic at the traffic signal ahead, they swerved their vehicle to the right which caused their vehicle to crash into the sidewalk and remained stopped at a tree. The Camaro caught fire as a result of the crash and the silver Acura drove away from the scene.

Who Was Driving the Camaro?

The motorist behind the wheel of the Camaro was identified as a man in his 20’s from San Jose. Sadly, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene due to the fatal extent of his injuries sustained in the crash.

Residents Outraged by Street Racing

The Chevrolet Camaro crashed into a tree with so much force that it caused debris from the vehicle to land in the backyard of a home in the area. Some neighbors stated that if their children were playing outside at the time of the accident, they may have been injured by the flying debris. One resident, Steven Hames, reported that he discovered an oil pump that had come to a rest on his hot tub. Hames also said that part of his home’s fence that is shared with his neighbors nearby sustained damage. Others reported that they felt their house shake as the crash took place. Officers from the California Highway Patrol stated that it is unusual to observe street racing in the vicinity during daylight hours. However, neighbors disagree with this statement and say they hear drivers street racing on the roadway often and it is constant during the night. Residents are asking authorities to improve their traffic enforcement on the roadway so San Tomas Expressway does not continue to be a drag race fatality zone.

Other Driver Could Face Charges

According to the California Highway Patrol, the motorist of the silver Acura that was racing along with the Chevrolet Camaro could face serious offenses. Ross Lee, an officer for CHP, reported that when a motorist has involvement in a street race where the other motorist passes away as a result of the race, the other motorist could be charged with vehicular manslaughter.
