Sacramento Pedestrian Death Caused by Drunk Driver

A pedestrian death occurred on May 23 when a woman was killed along Arden Way as she walked down the roadway. The accident happened between Clinton Road and Markston Road during the evening hours. There were witnesses to the accident, who pointed out the vehicle that struck the woman had left the scene. According to authorities with the Sacramento Police Department, they had already been looking for a reported drunk driver when the collision occurred. I’d like to take this opportunity to offer my condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Pedestrian Death Details

The report of the pedestrian death states that the woman, believed to be a transient, was hit and her body flew into the air. It struck a piece of construction equipment and landed in front of a police cruiser about half a block away. Her personal effects were strewn along the roadway by the impact. Authorities located the reported drunk driver, and that person was taken into custody. The identity of the woman who died has not been released by authorities, pending notification of the next of kin.

Drunk Drivers

Drunk drivers are a serious problem in Sacramento County, as they are elsewhere in California. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 2016 saw 489 accidents in Sacramento that involved drunk drivers. All of the accidents reported resulted in injuries or deaths. An additional 965 drivers were taken into custody for drunk driving. However, those statistics are from local police and do not include those from the California Highway Patrol. Since Sacramento is the number one city, compared to others of the same size, for drunk driving, it is important to look out for these dangerous drivers. By reporting these drivers to police, it can help lower the number of pedestrian deaths.

Filing for a Wrongful Death

Family members who were supported by an individual who died due to negligence can claim fair compensation for that loss. In the above pedestrian death, a conviction of the motorist for drunk driving provides the proof. Recoverable damages can be used to pay funeral and burial expenses as well as other economic and noneconomic losses such as:

  • Loss of financial support, including the loss of inheritance
  • Household services
  • Loss of comfort, moral support, companionship, affection, and consortium
  • Loss of parental guidance, care, and training

How a Lawyer Can Help

A seasoned personal injury lawyer who is experienced in handling wrongful death cases can be an invaluable asset. They can explain to you who is eligible to file for a wrongful death case. They can deal with the insurance company for you. In addition, they can collect evidence and perform their own investigation into the cause of death. By proving fault, the family can be financially compensated. This can help take away the stress of financial loss, which compounds the grief already present.
