Sacramento Neighborhoods Offering New Bike-Share Options

Sacramento Neighborhoods Offering New Bike-Share Options

I’m Ed Smith, a West Sacramento car accident lawyer. My firm often provides information on transportation topics to area residents. Recently, people living in the Sacramento, Davis, and West Sacramento areas were provided with a new way to travel short distances by renting bikes from Social Bikes (SoBi), an international bike-sharing company.

New Service in May

As of mid-May 2017, SoBi began providing up to 100 bikes and 20 parking stations in our area. Many consumers like the option of using these bikes to travel short distances from mass transportation portals to their jobs, while grabbing a meal during their lunch hour – or just when needing to take a nice bike ride through beautiful areas to clear their heads on a stressful day.

Watch Youtube Video Social Bicycles 2016. In this video you will learn how and why the company was developed. You will come to understand why this mode of transportation belongs in your city.

Plans to Expand the Initial Roll-Out of the SoBi System

Fully expecting this bike-sharing program to become as popular here as it is in places like Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon – and elsewhere around the world – current plans include extending the program to Davis during upcoming months. Students should appreciate the service since they’re provided with small monthly or annual fees, in addition to special low rates for individual rides. By November of 2017, there should be as many as 800 bikes and 100 electric motor assist bikes available in all these areas.

Supplementing Mass Transit Options

In addition to student riders, SoBi expects to help numerous younger workers who are postponing the purchase of a first vehicle until they’ve had time to establish some job security for themselves. Having the opportunity to supplement mass transit with an environmentally friendly rental bike service provides all ages with positive options.

Potential High-Volume Pedal Traffic Areas Targeted First by Local Officials

Sacramento Councilman Steve Hansen is among other local officials who realized that this program should first be offered near West Sacramento’s waterfront district – and the midtown and downtown portions of the city where so many workers gather daily. Riders in good physical shape often find running errands by biking short distances not only helps save money on high parking fees – their mood can be lightened just being outdoors.

Gratitude for this Alternative Transportation

We should all thank local council members and politicians for obtaining this transportation alternative for us. Earlier attempts at working with a similar bike-share company had to be dropped since the lengthy planning stages greatly delayed the actual roll-out of the program. Both Mayor Christopher Cabaldon, and Councilman Steven Hansen played crucial roles in getting this program started.

Other Bike Share Locations Announced

Once this bike-share program has moved into Davis, it will also be serving Oak Park, Curtis Park, East Sacramento, and Land Park.

Is This New Bike-Share Program Easy to Use?

If you’ve got a smartphone that lets you easily download and use new apps, it should be easy for you to locate and use a SoBi bike. You’ll find the bikes (equipped with GPS systems) parked in racks located in high-use areas. If you fully honor the limited rules governing bike parking, you may even earn an occasional discount. A monthly membership fee can cost about $15 — and far cheaper fees should be available to students.

Always Concentrate on Safe Bike Riding to Avoid Accidents

Once you rent one of the SoBi bikes, be sure to obey all nearby traffic signals and yield the right-of-way to pedestrians when necessary. While bikes do offer a special type of freedom, you must ride fully focused on your surroundings so you can avoid getting into a serious accident with a motor vehicle.
