A motorcyclist suffered injuries on November 2 in a crash involving a fleeing driver in Sacramento. The rider was discovered along the right-hand side of the road by officers with the California Highway Patrol (CHP)

Authorities Search for Motorist in Crash Involving a Fleeing Driver

Sacramento Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene to assess reported injuries to the rider. No additional information was provided on the condition of the rider or the hit-and-run vehicle. A search for the driver and determination of how the crash occurred is underway by CHP traffic collision detectives.

Tracking Down a Hit-and-Run Driver

Accidents that include a hit-and-run driver have become more common. Although police work hard to find these motorists, an injury lawyer has the experience and resources to locate the at-fault party in an accident that involves a fleeing driver. The key is conducting a thorough investigation, which might include:

  • Investigators check the police report for clues and accuracy.
  • The investigators visit the accident site to look for physical evidence.
  • Surveillance cameras are checked to see if the crash involving a fleeing driver was captured on film.
  • Interviews are conducted with witnesses to the crash.
  • Area body shops are contacted to see if a vehicle was brought in that exhibited the appropriate damage.

Once the hit-and-run driver is located, they can be held financially responsible for the injuries they caused. In addition, they may face charges of hit-and-run with bodily injury, which includes a fine and possible jail time. However, if the driver does not carry insurance or is underinsured, there is another option for the injured motorcyclist to recover compensation.

Recovering Injury Compensation Using Your Insurance Add-On

When drivers first elect to take auto insurance, they are offered an optional policy that covers uninsured/underinsured motorists. In California in 2019, 16.6 percent of all motorists carried no auto insurance at all. For this reason, many Californians opt to add this additional insurance policy.

Your policy also covers your motorcycle injuries in a crash involving a fleeing driver if the motorist cannot be found or is uninsured or underinsured. The injured person can use their own policy to recover compensation. If the injured party does not have the add-on uninsured/underinsured policy but another member of the immediate family does, their policy can be used instead. Policy rates remain unaffected.
