Rollover Injures Teen near Chico

I’m Ed Smith, a Chico Car Accident Lawyer. A single-vehicle car accident occurred south of Chico on Saturday, November 11.

What Happened?

Sometime around 11:30 in the morning, a teenage boy was heading north in a Nissan Murano crossover SUV with a dark blue paint job on Aguas Frias Road, west of Dodgeland. Around the intersection with Nelson Road, the teen drifted off of the road and ended up driving down into a ditch. The rural stretch of road is lined on both sides with irrigation ditches that provide little to no shoulder. As the Nissan Murano dived into the ditch, the momentum of the vehicle caused it to roll over two times after it hit the embankment before coming to a halt back on the road. The boy driver luckily escaped major injury after the violent car accident and reported minor injuries to the responding California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers.

Upon further investigation, the California Highway Patrol officers determined that excessive speed was the most probable cause of the accident. No traces of drugs or alcohol were determined to have played a part in this accident. Photos of the scene show trimmings and a bumper scattered across the road and in the irrigation ditch. The forces of the crash caused the tailgate to flip open and the contents of the vehicle to fly around the cabin.

Possible Injuries

We can most likely assume that the teenage boy had properly worn his seatbelt while driving because he avoided major injury in the double rollover accident. Even though the seatbelt most likely saved his life, it could have also caused injuries as it held his body in place while the car rolled. Clavicular fractures are common because the shoulder strap crosses right over the collarbone causing it to snap under extreme pressure. Rib fractures are also common from the shoulder strap. The pressure can either break the rib bone or cause it to separate from the cartilage that connects it to the sternum.

Little Room for Error

After studying the photos of the scene and the road where this car accident occurred, I noticed how almost non-existent the shoulders of the asphalt is on Aguas Frias Road. The road is long and straight with fields on either side as it cuts through rural farmland. Steep ditches line each side only feet away from the white lines. This gives little room for error for the drivers traveling along it. A shoulder can provide an escape pathway in the event of an emergency or sudden obstruction for a driver. Wildlife crossing the road can also cause a person to instinctively swerve. This road provides little room, literally, for error and any little swerve can send a driver and their vehicle into the ditch.
