I have represented many, many people over the years horribly injured in catastrophic collisions.  Few are more heartbreaking than the loss of a limb.

Robotic Hand Wired Directly Into Brain Can ‘Feel’ Again

I am excited to learn that a new advanced robotic hand that is wired directly into the brain has been successfully tested, allowing a paralyzed man to “feel”.  The hand, developed by the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University, is part of a research project into advanced replacement limbs funded by the US military’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Particularly in motorcycle accidents, arms and legs are exposed to potentially severe injury.

Any health care professional who assists people who have lost limbs will acknowledge that the psychological challenges such patients battle every day are extremely difficult. Losing a limb profoundly impacts every aspect of one’s life — mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.   Factors that contribute to such impacts depends on age of the victim, psychological health, financial situation, circumstances of the loss (trauma, disease or congenital), and support or lack thereof from family and friends.

The road to recovery can be significantly arduous.  But notwithstanding the difficulties, we are very excited about the future when we see advances in technology such as the work the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University is accomplishing.
