Rio Linda Multiple Vehicle Accident

A Rio Linda multiple vehicle accident occurred on February 22 shortly before 6:00 p.m. The accident, which involved four vehicles, happened at Rio Linda Boulevard and Marysville Boulevard. It involved a white minivan, a black sedan, and two additional vehicles. The head-on collision resulted in at least two rollovers as a result of the crash, and one vehicle ended up in a ditch. Both the northbound and southbound lanes were blocked. An ambulance was called due to injuries that have not yet been disclosed. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating the crash as to cause.

Tow trucks were required to remove vehicles from the scene and pull one from the ditch. One of the drivers was taken into custody after it was discovered that he had priors for auto theft and reportedly said that he had paid cash for the vehicle he was driving. A toxicologist was also called to the scene since it was suspected that either alcohol or drugs played a part in the accident.

Head-On Collisions

Head-on collisions happen infrequently, but when they do, fatalities often occur. In the event that an individual is involved in a head-on crash, they need to prove that the other party was negligent. On many occasions, this is not difficult since the negligent driver is usually powering his or her vehicle in the wrong direction. Let’s look at some common reasons this occurs:

  • Distracted driving:  Driving without maintaining one’s focus on the road is called distracted driving. Activities that lead to this error include texting, talking on the phone, eating, talking to someone else in the vehicle or looking at the GPS system. While California allows hands-free calls, it has been proven that the loss of mental focus this activity entails is still dangerous. It is better to wait until the trip is completed.
  • Drowsy driving: Driving while tired can lead to a multiple vehicle accident. This happens when the driver did not receive sufficient sleep due to shift work and a busy schedule. It can also occur secondary to some medical conditions or medications.
  • Drunk driving: Driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol can lead to a head-on crash.
  • Unfamiliar road: Driving along an unfamiliar road can be hazardous, particularly a busy highway. It is a good idea to map out your route ahead of time.
  • Confusing roads: It is not always the driver’s fault. In some instances, the design of the road is confusing due to poor planning by the contractor and the governmental agency involved in its construction. In this case, a lawsuit can be lodged against the designer, contractor and the city or state.
  • Age: Both extremes of the age spectrum are involved in head-on collisions. This is because younger drivers lack experience, and older ones may have visual or cognition difficulties.

Head-On Collisions that Lead to Multiple Vehicle Crashes

On a busy highway, a single head-on collision can lead to a multiple vehicle crash. The drivers of cars adjacent to the head-on collision may not be able to get out of the way and become involved. This usually is associated with rear end accidents or side impact crashes. On occasion, the driver in the vicinity of the head-on crash may try to veer out of the way and end up off the road or in a ditch. Once the tires of a vehicle hit the gravel or soft earth, the vehicle may roll over.
